Voodoos strike late to upend Canadians

POWASSAN, Ont. – A Michael Silveri goal with just 31 seconds remaining in regulation proved to be the game-winner as the Powassan Voodoos upended the Rayside-Balfour Canadians 3-1 Monday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest held at the Powassan Sportsplex.

This tightly-played match-up saw neither side score in the game’s opening 20 minutes.

Action in the middle stanza was also scoreless as goaltenders Garrett Forrest of the Voodoos and Jessie Morin of the Canadians kept opposing shooters at bay through two periods of play.

The home side would eventually break the deadlock 7:14 into the third as Powassan’s Tyler Peters collected his 22nd marker of the season.

Rayside-Balfour battled back to knot the affair at 1-1 six minutes later when Otis Goldman’s 17th evened things up.

Then with overtime looming, Michael Silveri was the hero late for the Voodoos as he notched the eventual difference maker in the waning moments.

Silveri then came back again and picked up some insurance as he put one into an empty net with two seconds left to round out the scoring.

Eric Allair and Aaron Dart had two assists apiece for Powassan in the triumph.

Forrest made 23 saves overall to earn the victory for the Voodoos while Morin made 36 stops in a hard-luck loss for the Canadians.
