Rayside-Balfour tops Timmins in OT on Mooney’s game-winner

CHELMSFORD, Ont. – A Ryan Mooney power play goal 2:15 into overtime was the difference as a short-staffed Rayside-Balfour Canadians side pulled out a 3-2 victory over the Timmins Rock Thursday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Chelmsford Arena.

Neither side would convert offensively in a scoreless first frame with the Canadians holding a 10-9 edge in shots on goal.

Heading to the middle stanza, Rayside-Balfour opened the scoring just 40 seconds into the period thanks to Evan Krassey’s 11th tally of the season.

Timmins countered however 14 minutes later as Derek Seguin collected his team-leading 24th to knot the affair at 1-1 after two periods of play.

Action in the third saw the Rock take the lead at 13:31 as Seguin scored again to reach the 25-goal plateau on the campaign during a power play chance.

However, Rayside-Balfour countered with 3:25 left in regulation to force OT as Giordano Biondi notched the equalizer.

Then in extra time, the Canadians picked up a man advantage early and with the host up four skaters to three, Mooney buried the game-winner to give his side the win.

Sebastien Plamondon made 22 stops to record the victory while Jean-Marc Brisson faced 38 attempts in defeat for Timmins helping the Rock pick-up a point on the night.
